Start your Research

Sometimes knowing where to start your research is the hardest part of the process. Never fear! This page is full of tried and true places to start (and hopefully finish!) your research. Depending on your needs you will most likely need to consult multiple resources, including journal articles and books.

To search many different journals at the same time I recommend using these databases; however, several of the core journals are not covered by these resources and must be accessed individually (see the next box on this page)

International Bibliography of Theatre and Dance
Specifically focused on research in dance and drama. Only includes a small amount of pedagogy/education information, but this is generally good stuff when you find it.
Education Source
Large database solely focused on education. Not as large as ERIC, but I tend to find more relevant information related to dance in here than in there.
ERIC
Largest database specifically focused on education. While not solely focused on dance, you can certainly find plenty of good information (generally aimed at dance in schools - elementary, secondary, and postsecondary).

Core Journals

Research in Dance Education
Research in Dance Education aims to inform, stimulate lively and critical debate and promote the development of high quality research and practice in dance education. The journal is relevant to dance academics, teachers and learners.
Journal of dance education
The Journal of Dance Education publishes original articles on topics related to the practical and theoretical aspects associated with dance education. Articles considered for publication in the journal should emphasize professional issues concerned with all aspects of teaching dance and dance education.
Dance research journal
The Dance Research Journal, published twice yearly, is the official journal of the Congress on Research in Dance. DRJ carries scholarly articles, book reviews, a list of books and journals received, and reports of scholarly conferences, archives, and other projects of interest to the field.
Dance education in practice
Dance Education in Practice publishers articles focused on practical approaches to dance education and teaching that provide educators with models of new ideas, strategies, and content they can apply to their own practice. Targeted toward dance studio teachers, P-12 dance educators, postsecondary teacher education professionals, teaching artists, and dance education undergraduate and graduate students.
Dance teacher
Written just for dance professionals. Each issue is packed with useful ideas that will help you and your students become better dancers.
