NEW RESOURCE!

UCI Libraries is proud to offer a subscription to IPA Source! IPA Source was developed to assist singers and teachers in the intelligent and well informed performance of vocal literature. It is the largest collection of literal translations and International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) transcriptions on the web. The goal of IPA Source is to promote comprehension and accurate pronunciation of foreign language texts in order for the singer to imbue each syllable with the appropriate emotional content.

Streaming video of concerts, operas, ballets, music documentaries, and masterclasses with globally famous musicians. Content is regularly updated as it normally includes performances from European music summer festivals and annual music competitions.

LISTEN

Naxos Music Library This link opens in a new window
Stream music from major classical record labels, such as Sony Classical. Music is primarily focused on Western art music (i.e., classical music), but some music from non-Western traditions can also be found here. Useful factual information can be found in the digitized liner notes to better contextualize the music you are listening to.

RILM Abstracts of Music Literature This link opens in a new window
Selectively indexes scholarly writings about music occurring in journals, books, dissertations, festschrift, conference proceedings, and other similar publications. Primarily focused on Western art music, but one can locate some interesting literature related to musical theater also. Indexes writings that were published from early-20th century to the present.

Contains several important resources including New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. Use this site to find biographies of composers and performers. Also important for the complete works listings of each composer providing essential information for program notes.

CONNECT

If you're researching off campus then you will need to login to the UCI VPN for authentication through the campus network. There are three different methods: Software, Web, and Mobile. Software takes a little more time to setup the first time, but it works with all resources. Web is known to not work well with many of the streaming media resources.
