Nielsen Datasets

Am I an eligible researcher?

Eligibility for access is strictly limited to current UC Irvine tenured or tenure-track faculty, PhD students, and Postdoctoral researchers.  PhD students and Postdocs must have a tenure-track faculty advisor.

If you do not meet this eligibility criteria, you will not be able to access the Nielsen Datasets.

PhDs and Postdocs: Have I talked to UC Irvine faculty yet?

As you register with the Kilts Center, you must list a faculty advisor, who must be a full-time UC Irvine tenured or tenure-track professor.

  • Your advisor for the Nielsen Datasets does not necessarily need to be a professor on your committee.
  • Don't assume a professor has completed registration for the Nielsen datasets.  Faculty only register if they're using the data for their own research, or they're currently advising PhD students or Postdocs who need the data.  Did the professor tell you that they have completed registration?
  • Before you can access data, your advisor must first individually complete the registration process with the Kilts Center.

What's the registration process with the Kilts Center?

Registration takes time because you'll be required to answer several questions about your research project.

Preview the questions (UCInetID authentication required)

Ready to start registration?  Follow these steps

  1. Visit the Kilts Center Registration website and choose these options:
    Country:  United States
    Institution:  University of California Irvine.

  2. You'll be redirected to a page with a message saying Contract Found.  Look for the link to the Request Access page.

  3. Enter your information in the Request Access form, and answer the questions about your research.

  4. After you register, the Kilts Center will review your project(s).  If the Kilts Center approves your project, then they will automatically email the UC Irvine Libraries so our staff can accept your registration.

  5. Once the UC Irvine Libraries accept your registration, the Kilts Center will send you an activation email with steps for how to access the data.

When do the UC Irvine Libraries accept my registration?

UC Irvine Libraries' staff typically accept registration requests within 48 business hours.

  • PhD students and Postdocs:  We don't get the Kilts Center’s automated email to accept your registration until your advisor first completes their own registration.  If you want the data quickly, please stay in communication with your advisor to see where they are at in the registration process with the Kilts Center.

If you don't receive an update after 48 business hours, please do the following:

  1. Visit the Libraries Ask A Librarian email service page.

  2. Copy and paste this script into the email form:
    • Question:
      Nielsen Datasets Registration Acceptance Request

    • More Detail/Explanation:
I am a researcher requesting access to the Nielsen Datasets.  It has been more than 48 business hours since I submitted my registration with the Kilts Center for their approval.  I need UC Irvine Libraries staff to approve my registration by visiting the following guide (LibApps login required):  https://guides.lib.uci.edu/dataset-access-request-form/internal/nielsen-datasets
