Research data management lifecycle

Data collection and analysis will inevitably be a large part of your graduate education, whether it be working on a project with a professor or collecting data for your dissertation. There is a whole research data lifecycle that you need to be aware of. This section provides an overview of things you will need to think about in the research data management lifecycle, as well as resources that may support you throughout this process.

UC Irvine Libraries: Data, Publishing, and Digital Scholarship (DPDS)
UCI Libraries’ department of Data, Publishing, and Digital Scholarship (DPDS) fosters the use of transformative technology to manage, preserve, and share digital scholarship in an increasingly dynamic and computationally-rich research ecosystem. DPDS provides infrastructure, education and consultation services that support research data management and curation, open access publishing, digital collection-building, and critical literacies for digital research across disciplines.
UC Irvine Center for Statistical Consulting
Provides statistical and intellectual support to students, staff and faculty. The Center’s activities cover all aspects of the statistical design, analysis and interpretation of investigations in science and industry. Beyond just conducting data analysis, our services provide a holistic approach to our clients by providing assistance at all stages of project development from study design through final publication.
UC Irvine Virtual Computing Lab
The Virtual Lab (powered by Apporto) allows UCI affiliates to run specialized software within an internet browser. Applications available through the Virtual Lab include: Anaconda Python, ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS, Eviews, FlamMap, Matlab, Microsoft Office 2019, SAS, Stata, SPSS, Cran R, R Studio.

Asynchronous courses

Social Science Workshop (link will open in Canvas)
This workshop teaches data management and analysis for social science research including best practices for data organization in spreadsheets, reproducible data cleaning with OpenRefine, and data analysis and visualization in R. This curriculum is designed to be taught over two full days of instruction. Learn about:

Geospatial Workshop (link will open in Canvas)
This workshop focuses on working with geospatial data - managing and understanding spatial data formats, understanding coordinate reference systems, and working with raster and vector data in R for analysis and visualization.

• Introduction to R for Geospatial Data
• Introduction to Geospatial Raster and Vector Data with R

OpenRefine Workshop (link will open in Canvas)
OpenRefine is described as “a power tool for working with messy data” David Huynh - but what does this mean? It is probably easiest to describe the kinds of data OpenRefine is good at working with and the sorts of problems it can help you solve.
