Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM): Academic Integrative Centers/Universities

Academic centers for natural health sciences; offers academic degrees in Naturaopathic Medicine, Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, Nutrition, Herbal Sciences, Health Psychology, Exercise Science and Wellness, and LIOS/Bastyr School of Applied Behavioral Science.

CINIM is the first Canadian institution to be involved with the United States Consortium of Academic Health Centres for Integrative Medicine. In consort with the Faculties of Medicine and Nursing, the Calgary Health Region, and the Integrative Medicine Institute, CINIM is helping to fulfill the consortium's mission to facilitate the transformation of health care.

It was initially created in 1999 through funding from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, part of the National Institutes of Health. Initial studies have examined treatment approaches using anti-oxidants, yoga, acupuncture and chiropractic manipulation.

The Center is rapidly becoming recognized for providing “new knowledge” bridging complementary and conventional treatments – all for the singular purpose of achieving better health.

Their mission is to transform the way medicine is practiced by conducting rigorous research on integrative approaches to health, educating students, health professionals and the community, and treating patients with compassionate care that addresses all aspects of health and wellness - physical, psychological, social and spiritual.

1) provide a forum for evidence-based alternative and complementary medicine that can be combined with conventional medical therapies to optimize healing for patients.

2) develop integrative medicine educational programs for the Health Center's residents and medical and dental students. Recently, the Department of Family Medicine at the Health Center established an “Integrative Medicine in Residency” curriculum in partnership with the University of Arizona’s Integrative Medicine in Residency program.

3) pioneer innovative research programs in herbs and other biological-based therapies, acupuncture, naturopathy, Ayruveda, energy medicine and other complementary and alternative medical fields.

4) provide programs to broaden patients' understanding of the many complementary and alternative medicine therapies.

A leading international center for research, patient care, education and training in integrative medicine, the CIM is a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Center of Excellence for research in complementary medicine.

Under the leadership of Saki Santorelli, EdD, the Center serves a broad international constituency and resides within the Division of Preventive and Behavioral Medicine in the Department of Medicine.

As a healing-oriented approach to medical care, integrative medicine takes into account the whole person (body, mind, spirit, and emotion), including all aspects of lifestyle.
