Newspapers are not considered scholarly, but they provide immediate reporting of events. National newspapers have research staffs and journalists whose insightful analyses of the news can explain pros and cons, show chronologies, describe major players, provide background/context/history, and/or lay out data in easily understood formats.

State and local newspapers may report on Southeast Asian American events, businesses, personalities, and organizations in their geographic areas. The Los Angeles Times is a national newspaper that reports on Southeast Asian Americans in California, especially given the critical mass of Vietnamese in Orange County, Cambodians in Long Beach, and Hmong in Fresno, for example. Likewise, there are communities of Hmong in Minnesota and Wisconsin, so news coverage in those states will include these groups.
