About the cPanel

What is cPanel?

cPanel (also referred to as the "dashboard") is a web-based control panel that allows users to manage their hosting environment without needing to know advanced programming.  It's the main landing page that you'll see every time you log into the Sandbox and it serves as a sort of "home base."

With cPanel Dashboard, you can:

  • Install applications like WordPress with just a few clicks.
  • Set up and manage domains and subdomains.
  • Upload, edit, and organize files directly through the File Manager.
  • Create and manage databases using MySQL and phpMyAdmin.

cPanel Features

When working on small or temporary projects in Digital Sandbox, certain features of cPanel stand out as essential tools.

1. Application Installation (Installatron): With Installatron, you can install popular applications like WordPress, Omeka, Grav, or Scalar in just a few clicks, saving time during project setup.

2. Domain and Subdomain Management: Quickly set up subdomains to keep projects organized. For example, you can create project1.sandbox.lib.uci.edu for one project and testapp.sandbox.lib.uci.edu for another.

3. File Management: Easily upload, edit, and organize project files using the File Manager. This is perfect for quickly deploying static sites or updating project assets.

4. Database Creation and Management: Use the MySQL Database Wizard to create databases for applications or experiment with data management using phpMyAdmin.

5. Backup and Restore: Use cPanel’s backup tools to create and restore snapshots of your project. This ensures you can experiment without fear of losing data.
