Reference Resources

Reference resources can help you:

  • get an overview of a topic;
  • define terms, theories, and people in the field;
  • provide a list of relevant readings on a given topic.

Reference resources can be especially useful at the beginning of a project, to help you define and outline your topic. They can help you find major scholars and seminal research on a specific topic. They can help you understand how topics are structured and provide a vocabulary to focus your searches in the journal literature (see the Home page for additional tips).

Please note: for reference resources on linguistics in other languages, go to the UCI Library Catalog and enter search terms encyclopedia  Arabic / Persian / Chinese / Japanese or whatever language you are looking for and search. You can do a similar search by replacing encyclopedia with handbook.
