California Government Information: CAL Employment and Labor

The California Labor and Workforce Development Agency was created in 2002, and is the first cabinet-level agency to coordinate workforce programs. The Agency oversees seven major departments, boards and panels that serve California workers and businesses by improving access to employment and training programs, enforcing California labor laws to protect workers and create an even playing field for employers, and administering benefits that include workers’ compensation, unemployment insurance, disability insurance and paid family leave. These entities support our mission to provide leadership to protect and improve the well-being of California’s current and future workforce.

The California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) protects and improves the health, safety, and economic well-being of over 18 million wage earners and helps their employers comply with state labor laws. DIR is housed within the Labor & Workforce Development Agency.

The EDD promotes California's economic health by providing information to help people understand California's economy and make informed labor market choices.

Information focus includes labor market tools, information on filing an Unemployment Insurance or Disability Insurance claim, the latest employment tax information and forms, a wide array of employment and training services and publications. The Employment Development Department (EDD) is one of the largest state departments with employees at hundreds of service locations throughout the state. EDD connects job seekers and employers in an effort to build the economy of the Golden State.
