Zotero is a free reference management tool that offers both a downloadable software for Windows, Mac, and Linux and browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, or Safari.  

 

Zotero (free)  

  • Sort research into collections and create keywords as tags 

  • Save and annotate snapshots of web pages within citation library 

  • Unlimited Zotero library sharing with other users at no additional cost 

  • Save publication data from websites, journal articles, newspapers, and PDFs in user’s library 

  • Redirect through the user’s institutional proxy to access PDFs 

  • Available through third-party apps 

 

Zotero Connector (free) 

  • Recommended web browser extension 

  • Saves citations to online Zotero library 

  • Redirects user to institutional subscriptions 

 

Zotero Bookmarklet (free)  

  • Browser extension that takes a snapshot of website, journal, or article 

  • Adds and saves website metadata to Zotero library 

  • Available for most browsers, including mobile and tablet devices  

  • Choose target collection, add tags, and save to Zotero program using Microsoft Edge 

 

 Zotero Storage  

  • Online storage space for Zotero files 

  • Synchronize PDFs, images, web snapshots, and other files across shared computers 

  • Share Zotero attachments in group libraries and access files via Zotero library 

  • Free 300 MB storage with more storage options at affordable rates 

 

ZoteroBib is a free, simple, web-based tool for creating bibliographies, based on the same saving and citation functionality in Zotero.

If you want to quickly make a bibliography without making an account or installing a software, you may be interested in ZoteroBib. Similar to tools like CitationMachine and EasyBib, ZoteroBib creates free and accurate citations without advertisements.
