The UC Academic Senate passed a UC Open Access Policy on July 24, 2013 that ensures that future research articles authored by UC faculty will be made openly available to the public at no charge. The UCI Libraries are taking an active role in ushering in this new era by implementing new library services in support of the policy, educating faculty, and helping them share their research.

Agencies that sponsor research are interested in maximizing the value of that research. Increasingly, this means requiring the recipients of grants to make the results of their research – both scholarly articles and the data supporting them – freely available to the public.
What is Open Access? Open Access literature known as OA is digital, online, free of charge, and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions. It usually removes price barriers (subscriptions, licensing fees, etc) and permission barriers (most copyright and licensing restrictions). It now comes in a variety of flavors.

Open Access Week began being celebrated in 2008 and is now in its fourth year. This archive notes the activities associated with the 2010 celebration worldwide.
Open Access Week will take place the third week of October.
