UC Discounts on Article Publication Charges (APCs) for Open Access Journals

OA Publishing Agreements and Discounts
The UCI Libraries are unable to contribute to individual APCs. The UC libraries negotiate agreements with scholarly journal publishers to reduce the amount authors must pay when they choose to publish open access. Most agreements offer up to full coverage of the open access fees; others offer a discount.

UC Open Access Policy

The UC Academic Senate passed a UC Open Access Policy on July 24, 2013 that ensures that future research articles authored by UC faculty will be made openly available to the public at no charge. The UCI Libraries are taking an active role in ushering in this new era by implementing new library services in support of the policy, educating faculty, and helping them share their research.

US Federal Funder Public Access Policies

Agencies that sponsor research are interested in maximizing the value of that research. Increasingly, this means requiring the recipients of grants to make the results of their research – both scholarly articles and the data supporting them – freely available to the public.

What is Open Access? Open Access literature known as OA is digital, online, free of charge, and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions. It usually removes price barriers (subscriptions, licensing fees, etc) and permission barriers (most copyright and licensing restrictions). It now comes in a variety of flavors.

Open DOAR
If you are seeking an institutional repository in which to post an archived copy of an article. Can browse a list of repositories by country or subject area.
figshare
Popular option for posting research results in any subject area & in many different file formats. Considered easy to use and makes your work discoverable and easily citable for users.
OpenDepot
OpenDepot.org, retired 2017. EDINA ran the (Open)Depot service between 2007 and 2017 to support academics in making their research output Open Access. The contents of the repository, OpenDepot, have now been migrated to Zenodo. https://zenodo.org/communities/opendepot/
Zenodo
Recently (May 2013) launched multidisciplinary repository is intended to share and showcase all research outputs not already posted in subject or institutional repositories.

OA Support Resources

There are many tools that promote and support OA scholarship and publishing.

ROARMAP
This Registry of Open Access Repositories Mandatory Archiving Policies lists institutions that have a mandate. Not an exhaustive list and requires institutions to register their mandates.
Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)
In order to be included in DOAJ, journals must be OA without an embargo, be scholarly in content & exercise peer-review quality control. Appears to be the most comprehensive free listing of OA journals available and the list grows quickly.
Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA)
OASPA advocates & promotes Gold OA. This list will identify publishers engaged in high quality OA publishing.

RCUK Open Access Mandate
Research Councils UK is considering changing its open access policies to mandate that all RCUK-funded papers be made freely available six months after publication. (March 2012) - PDF
Harvard Graduate School of Education faculty have adopted an OA Policy
Faculty at the Harvard Graduate School of Education voted overwhelmingly at its last faculty meeting to allow the university to make all faculty members' scholarly articles publicly available online.
