UCI Libraries offers access to the New York Times. This guide explains how to create an account.

Enjoy access to NYTimes.com, courtesy of UCI Libraries.*

To activate complimentary NYTimes.com access, you must be a current student, faculty or staff member at UCI.

Follow the steps laid out in the box below to create your NYTimes.com account. After registration you can access the New York Times from nytimes.com or download the app. You will not need to access through the Library website. You will need to renew your subscription every 4 years.

There are many features and benefits included as part of a NYT subscription, such as Learning Tools and NYT Audio. Go here for more details.

*This does not include e-reader editions, NYT Cooking, Times Insider content, or digital versions of the New York Times Crossword. Mobile apps are not supported on all devices.

Accessing the NYTimes.com

  1. While on campus, or while connected to the VPN (make sure to select Group: UCI Full) from off campus, visit AccessNYT.com <https://nytimesineducation.com/access-nyt/>.
  2. Create a NYTimes.com account using your UCI email address. Type in "Irvine" and it will find University of California, Irvine.

Fill in your UCI email address, create a password, and choose the appropriate "type of user." Then click "Sign Up."

3. If you wish, you can also download the NYT mobile app. Visit nytimes.com/mobile.

4. Additionally, for iPhone users, you can download the NYT audio app (available May 2023). Visit the Apple App Store.

After registration, you can enjoy access to NYTimes.com from any network or location.
The expiration date of your Pass will be shown to you upon activation. Accounts are good for 4-years.

Having problems creating an account or renewing?

If you currently have a personal paid subscription to the New York Times and are having difficulty creating a UCI account, please contact the New York Time's customer service directly.

Browsers

If using Safari to create your account and the process stalls after identifying the University of California as your School, try a different browser. Once your account is created you should be able to sign in and use the Safari browser to read the paper.

Users can email NYT education support team at edu@nytimes.com with any inquiries. Or you can communicate with them via the NYT Group Subscription live chat. Please keep in mind that these services are staffed M-F 8am-5pm EST.

Renewal of Your Account

Computer Website Renewal:

  • Log out of NYT on ALL applicable devices -- this includes phone, tablet, etc.
  • Make sure you are connected to the VPN, Group UCI Full. If you are unsure if you are connected to the correct VPN, go here and click on the button "Test My VPN Connection."
  • Follow the instructions "How to Accss the NYTimes.com"
    • Look up University of California, Irvine
    • On the NYT registration page, click "Already have an account?"
    • Input existing NYT login credentials.
    • Click "Log In."
  • When renewing on a computer that you regularly use to access NYTimes.com, you will often be auto-recognized.

Mobile App Renewal:

You might get stuck in a loop when trying to reestablish your account on the mobile app, like this.

Already a subscriber?  Log in.  >>  Don’t have an account?  Create one.  >>  “Could Not Create Account.  The e-mail address provided is already in use.”  >> Already a subscriber?  Log in. 

If that happens, delete and reinstall the mobile app.

NYT in Education

 NYT in Education offers curated resources for educators. Our subscription includes access to these resources that aren't open to the public. Users do need to re-certify each year to access.
