Miminum Recommendations

Privacy is not an on/off switch, and there is a spectrum of things you can do to make your information more or less private. However, the following are some "starting point" recommendations that can make you less vulnerable to unintended breaches in privacy.

  • Use good passwords: Use complex passwords that are not easy to guess, and do not reuse passwords. Alternatively, use a password manager.
  • Use two-factor authentication: Whenever possible, turn on two-factor authentication.
  • Think before clicking or opening: Don’t open attachments if you don’t know what they are. Scan links by hovering over URLs before clicking.
  • Know how to control privacy settings on your devices: Locate the Settings on any device or application, find the “Privacy” or “Security” settings, and review or change any default settings
  • “Tidy up” accounts and profiles when possible: Are you sharing or tagged in things that you don't wish to be associated with in the future? Would a future employer want to see this?

While these recommendations are tailored to the experience of one individual, a practice of privacy is more about collective and systemic actions, whether that means pro-privacy regulation, alternative technical options, or social justice organizing.
