The United States Government is the largest publisher in the world. As part of its publishing program, the U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) through the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) distributes certain classes of Government documents free of cost to designated libraries throughout the United States and its territories.These libraries are known as Federal depository libraries. The University of California, Irvine Libraries are a Federal depository library.

The SuDoc Classification System Deconstructed
The first letters of a Superintendent of Documents (SuDoc) number reflect the department or agency that issues the publication. The issuing agency is the document author. Additional information on subordinate SuDoc structure is available at FDLP.
"The CGP is the finding tool for federal publications that includes descriptive records for historical and current publications and provides direct links to those that are available online. Users can search by authoring agency, title, subject, and general key word, or use an "Advanced Search" template for additional options."
