Reference Sources

Reference resources - encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks - can be a great place to start research. Entries can provide a citeable overview of a topic, outline key themes and subthemes, help generate keywords to use in searching, and list seminal readings or key scholars on the topic.  Below is a small sample of more specialized reference resources, but good general resources include:


Language changes! The ways people describe themselves over time changes, and organizing information and knowledge is challenging and labor-intensive. Sometimes, we might think a descriptive term is ubiquitous over time, but historically, a different term was used to self-describe or to organize information.
