UCI Entrepreneurial Support Entities


UCI ANTrepreneur Center
Dedicated to assisting all UCI students in becoming successful ANTrepreneurs- particularly in the early stages of the startup process- through education, consultation, mentorship, and access to resources. 


UCI Applied Innovation- The Cove
The “front door” for industry collaboration with UCI.  Accelerates appropriate commercialization, technology transfer, public-private partnerships, and social entrepreneurships.  A conduit between the Orange County business community and UCI faculty and students.


The Beall Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship
One of the Centers of Excellence within the Paul Merage School of Business.  Its mission is to provide education and hands-on opportunities for students to learn about the process of entrepreneurship and innovation first hand.


Community & Economic Development Clinic
Part of the UCI Law School.  Focuses on housing and homelessness, community, small-business and non-profit development, and policy initiatives designed to improve client communities.


UCI Office of Technology Alliances (OTA)
Fosters faculty/industry alliances and commercialization of UC Irvine technology for the broad public benefit.


TechPortal Orange
In UCI Medical Center.  The first clinically-oriented biomedical incubator facility in Southern California.


A UCI + UCSD multidisciplinary research institute. The goal: to develop innovative information technology-based products and services to benefit society and ignite economic development in the region and state.

UCI Entrepreneurial Competitions


New Venture Competition
Open to all UCI students, staff, researchers.  Offering the opportunity to form a team, create a business plan and potentially fund a business idea all within six months. (Formerly called the Business Plan Competition).  Objectives of the competition are 1) to provide students with a hands-on opportunity to understand, experience and get involved in the process of launching a business, and 2) to help students achieve their dream by launching startups that are fundable.


Butterworth Product Development Competition
Open to all UCI students.  Designed to encourage the creation of new technologies with potential for commercialization. Students are encouraged to submit new products that involve the development of software and systems.


Beall Student Design Competition
Open to all UCI students. Offered to encourage the creation of new technologies, or solutions to current design problems that have the potential for commercialization.  Students are encouraged to submit new product ideas that involve the development of hardware and devices.


UC Startup Innovation Challenge
Open to UC alumni, students, faculty, and staff. Startups must have at least one co-founder who is a UC alumnus, student,  faculty member, or staff.  Startups in any industry and any vertical are welcome to apply.  Sponsored by The Regents of the University of California, represented by the Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

Orange County Small Business Development Center
The Orange County SBDC offers no-charge, personalized business assistance in a confidential, one-on-one setting, and team business consulting.


U.S. Small Business Administration
Delivers loans, loan guarantees, contracts, counseling sessions and other forms of assistance to small businesses, with special guides for many different types of businesses (women, minorities, veterans, etc.)


Minority Business Development Agency
A federal agency dedicated exclusively to supporting minority business enterprise.

What can I access? 

Access is generally available to all users. Registration or account creation might be required to access.

For commercial websites, the UCI Libraries do not offer premium memberships or subscriptions.


Access is available to all users ON the UCI campus and at GML.

OFF campus access requires Authorized Affiliates to log into the VPN with their active UCInetID and password. Authorized Affiliates are users with an active UCInetID and password, i.e. current UCI students, faculty, and staff.

These resources are not licensed by the UCI Libraries, but librarians occasionally promote them when they are relevant for certain types of research.

Access is available only for Authorized Affiliates, who are also affiliated with the Paul Merage School of Business.


The resources are limited to select UCI populations, based on the user’s status, e.g. current UCI Faculty or PhD students. Please refer to the UCI Libraries for access instructions.

Examples for why content may be limited include: a vendor set restrictions on who may access their information; alternatively, information may be sensitive, identifying, or embargoed;
