Graduate Student Orientation to Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering 2018-19: Getting Oriented: Things to Do

Settling In: Things to Do

  • Read or review Crafting Your Research Future: A Guide to Successful Master's and PhD Degrees in Science & Engineering, 2012 by Ling & Yang
  • Make sure that you have activated the VPN for Connecting from Off Campus to Remote Access to Library Resources
  • Your UCI Photo-ID should include a bar code strip so that you can check out materials and process ILL requests - it is activated the first time that you use it - if you have difficulties, contact someone at the Library Loan Desk.  Keep Library informed of any change to your eMail address.
  • For printing & copying, activate your UCI Photo ID card at the Library by adding money into the regenerator for photocopying (8 cents/page) and printing (12 cents/page); can be added to when money runs out; ID card will also work as a print card in all campus IT Centers but pricing for certain functions may vary
  • Choose PIN # - needed for some ILL & DDS requests
  • Know about Graduate Student Reading Rooms at both Langson & Science Libraries - obtain card key at Loan Desks
  • Explore Bibliographic Management Systems for managing your information retrieval and citation options
  • Create an account to track all library transactions in Library Search
  • Use MY ILL to follow status of InterLibrary Loan requests
  • Explore and navigate the Engineering Subject Guides prepared for each department and UCI Library website
  • If you are a TA, please serve as intermediary between faculty and librarian – send syllabus, assignments, seek contributions to support class to promote information literacy
  • Remember that there are many lectures, films, sporting events, cultural activities held on campus and reading opportunities for current books, in both fiction and non-fiction at the New Books Lobby collection at Langson Library
  • Show interest in Scholarly Communication, Data Management  and Research Metrics issues – support for open access resources, curiosity about where to publish, retain authors’ rights, be aware of copyright & fair use and scholarly purposing of content, etc
  • Remember that you can borrow digital cameras, laptops from the MRC and use the Presentation Studio and 3D printing station
  • Do not leave personal belongings unattended at any library and use the Campus Safety Escort Service when leaving the Library or campus alone after dark
