SE 104W - Community Archiving in Social Ecology - Winter 2022: Home

Introduction

This course highlights the process of retaining history and how to document it through community archiving, oral history and ethnography.  The ultimate outcome will be contributions to UCI's Special Collections from student experiences during COVID-19.  Themes may include:

  • personal experiences and observations of self & family, friends & peers
  • reshaping of cultural practices
  • student experiences of social justice issues
  • exploring how to better share underrepresented voices in archival records

This may be achieved by:

  • conducting oral histories, interviews
  • engaging in ethnographic outreach by writing up fieldnotes, producing &  compiling supporting documentation - timelogs, transcriptions, abstracts, narrator biographies, recipes, photographs, artwork, collages, reflections & impressions, stories and other outputs
  • learning more about research ethics and informed consent

The archive project will be a Google Folder Portfolio and this guide will offer ways to approach and populate that.  In order to prepare that students will develop an Portfolio Reflection Paper.
