SIRiPods - Summer 2021: Home

Welcome & Introduction

Welcome back to UCI and upper division status.  This guide will document some strategies for you to use as you develop and refine your research skills. Soon you will be taking upper division courses in writing and technical communications and senior design which brings together much of the project management skills you need to see the scope of a project from beginning to completion.

You will be using this book as a textbook:  Introduction to Engineering Research, 2020.

This is an interdisciplinary approach to engineering and you will have an overview of the career opportunities and learning more about the ongoing research in engineering ranging from:

  • Controlling Exposure to Wildfire Contaminants
  • Medical Innovation with Virtual Reality
  • Sustainable Energy and Fuels

There are a wide range of materials that will cover different perspectives on these topics so that you can:

  • find information, cite and reference it, synthesize, communicate about it to others, develop a viewpoint, relate to policy framework, understand its past foundation and future opportunities
  • develop fundamental research skills
    • understand scholarly communication - develop working definitions for peer review, collaboration, open access, data management, scholarship/scholarly publishing, innovation, academic integrity, scientific method & repetition / replication / reproducibility
    • different forms of scientific output:  text, images, datasets, tables, case studies, lab results, interviews, video

You will be conducting your work this summer remotely but it will prepare you for when we return to campus, to be able to navigate the UCI Libraries website and to use the new UC Library Search.  Just remember to filter your searches with the options on the left-side-bar.

This guide will also provide some resources in how to find specific information resources and to develop a solid foundation with different software packages that can aid your efficiency and effectiveness in developing consistency in writing, research, computation, collaboration and data management.  Just remember mastering these skills takes time and patience.  Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or research needs that you have.  Don't be overwhelmed; just realize that you have many choices and here at UCI we have many resources.

All About UC Library Search

What is UC Library Search?  It is a centralized library management and discovery system that unites the collections & digital resources for the entire UC system.  UC Library Search brings togehter all 10 UC campus libraries, the California Digital Library (CDL) and 2 regional storage facilities in one system and also enables users to easily link out to Worldcat to find materials outside the UC system, that can be borrowed via InterLibrary Loan (ILL).

How does UC Library Search function?  You can search across the collections of all UC campuses at once; you use your net ID and password to check out & renew materials - no more entering the long library card #; you can pick up materials from any UC campus; have continued ability to search & borrow items from outside the UC system through the Worldcat link within UC Library Search.  For more information, visit here.
